The Most Famous Bootleg Comme des Garçons T-Shirt
This T-shirt first appeared publicly in 2012 during 95 (In Paris, the outsiders are officially in), a group exhibition in Melbourne, Australia. The show brought together works by Marc Hundley, his twin brother Ian Hundley, and artist Nick Relph, all woven together by a single, curious theme: Comme des Garçons.
The story traces back to the Comme des Garçons Spring/Summer 1995 runway show in Paris, where both Marc and Ian Hundley walked as models. Years later, Marc created a cotton T-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “Comme des Garçons Spring/Summer 1995.”
By 2012, only three of these shirts were known to exist. Marc gave one to Ian after his deportation from the U.S. to the U.K. in 2009, gifted another to Relph, and kept the third for himself.
What began as a personal, almost mythic gesture has since become one of the most recognizable “bootleg” Comme des Garçons T-shirts, a piece that blurs the line between art, memory, and fashion.
